Homework #8
Problems from Marion and Thornton, chapter #7, except where otherwise
noted. Due in class on Wed, April 4. Note: all problems except 7-30
are intended as additional practice for the upcoming midterm!
- Two bodies of masses m and 2m are connected through a pulley
on an immovable wedge as shown on Fig. 2-B (page 95 of the book).
Choose generalized coordinates, write the Lagrangian and
obtain the equation(s) of motion. Neglect friction.
- Solve 3-43 using the Lagrangian formalism.
- 7-34
- 7-27. In addition, write the Lagrange's equations of motion too.
- 7-29
- 7-30. Note: this is a very important part of the Hamiltonian formalism we couldn't
cover in class. However, do this problem after the midterm, as
the exercise with the Poisson brackets won't help you prepare for it.
(But it will for Quantum Mechanics... as much as anything classical
could.)
