Homework #9
Problems from Marion and Thornton, chapter #8, except where otherwise
noted. Due in class on THURSDAY, April 12
(remember, Tom's conference will be on Wednesday April 11 instead
of class, and I will do more examples on Thursday in the time
slot of the conference; this will allow you to ask Tom questions before
the homework is due).
- A spherical galaxy has a radius R and a uniform
star density ρ. Using Gauss's law, calculate the gravitational
field and the potential as a function of the radial distance to the
center of the galaxy, r.
- What is the gravitational field of an infinitely long straight
wire with a mass density of λ? (Another application of Gauss's
law.)
- 8-3
- 8-7 (the Virial theorem for the central force field is given on
page 279, Eq.(7.213), and states
)
- 8-13
- 8-16
