PREREQUISITES - Students must have completed
171.101 with a grade of C- or better, and be enrolled in (or have previously
passed) 110.109.
TEXTBOOK: Halliday, Resnick, & Walker ``Fundamentals
of Physics'' 7th Edition (2005). This semester will cover chapters 21 through
37.
LECTURES: Lectures are Thursday and Friday 10:30 to 11:45
AM in Schafler Auditorium (Bloomberg). Lectures will not simply involve
following the text. There will be demonstrations to aid in understanding
the physics principles. The lectures will
stress the most important material in each chapter of the text. Exam
questions will be based on material covered in class.
CONFERENCE: Conferences are on Tuesday from 8AM to 9AM.
Your TA name and conference room is indicated on your registration form.
Please see Connie Fliegel (Bloomberg 366) if you have questions. Conferences
will predominantly involve the discussion and solution of problems and
examples. 20% of your final grade will be determined by your TA based on
your homework and conference participation. Thus, you should attend the
conference to which you are assigned. Your TA will also post office hours.
EXAMS: There will be two hourly exams taken during the
semester plus a three-hour final exam at the end. The hourly exams will
occur during a Tuesday conference.
Exam dates are:
First Exam: Tuesday, March 14, 8:00 to 9:00
AM (Chapters 21-27)
Second Exam: Tuesday, April 25, 8:00 to 9:00 AM
(Chapters 28-32)
Final Exam: Thursday, May 11, 2:00 to 5:00
PM (Chapters 21-37) Place of Final Exam TBD.
All students must bring their J-card IDs to all exams. There will a
review session organized by the
Senior TA before each exam. The time and place of the review session
will be announced.
You may not take notes or lists of formulae into the exam. A list of
formulae will be supplied at each exam.
GRADES: The final grade will be assigned based on the
following:
Hourly exam #1:
20%
Hourly exam #2:
20%
Final Exam:
40%
Homework and conference participation: 20%
HOMEWORKS: Problem assignments are to be completed online through
the egrade system. Your account will be the same as that from last semester.
Your TA will tell you the website which you should log in to for your section.
Homeworks will be assigned on Wednesdays and due the following Wednesday
at midnight. Late homeworks will not be accepted. You are encouraged to work
on the homeworks with other students, but this does not mean distributing
the work load or copying. The main purpose of the homework is to give you
practice in solving the problems, since you will not learn physics by simply
listening to lectures or reading the book. Simplified versions of homework
problems may also appear on the exams. If you do not have an account (i.e.
you did not take 101 last semester) you must purchase an egrade account.
Go to http://egradeplus.wiley.com to purchase an account.
POLICY ON GRADE CHANGES: In the event that a student believes
that their exam has been misgraded, they are to do the following in order
(moving to the next step ONLY AFTER the preceding step has not resolved
the dispute):
1) Turn in to their TA a written explanation of their arguments and
their answer to the disputed exam question. Their TA will discuss this material
with the TA who graded the problem to see if a regrade is warranted.
2) Meet with the Senior TA.
3) Meet with Prof. Heckman. He will discuss a regrade ONLY if the dispute
has not been settled by the student's TA and the senior TA. To insure compliance
with steps 1 and 2, he will consult with the TA and senior TA prior to any
regrading discussion with the student.
MAKE-UP EXAMS: Make-up exams will be given only if the student has
a serious illness that is documented with a signed Physician's note or
if the student can document in writing that they were out-of-town on official
university business. Make-up exams will generally be oral exams given by
Prof. Heckman. Students missing an exam will receive a grade of zero.
HELP: Your professor and TA will have official office
hours.
A graduate student TA will be available in the Tutoring Room, Bloomberg
168 during the following hours:
Monday 1-5 PM, Tuesday 1-5PM, Wednesday 1-5PM, Thursday 1-3PM, Friday
1-5PM
Undergraduate physics majors from The Society of Physics Students will
be available for tutoring on Sundays 6-9 PM in room 278 in Bloomberg.
DISABILITY SERVICES: If you are a student with a disability
or believe you might have a disability which requires accommodations, please
contact Dr. Richard Sanders, Associate Director of Academic Advising, School
of Arts and
Sciences and Engineering, Undergraduate Programs at 410-516-8216/sanders@jhu.edu
or Mrs. Peggy Hayeslip, University
Coordinator of Disability Services at 410-516-8949/phayeslip@jhu.edu
to discuss reasonable and appropriate
accommodations. To receive accommodations you must submit a letter
to me from one of these individuals first.
WEB SITE: The course web site is at www.pha.jhu.edu/~c171_102/
This site will communicate important information (schedules, office hours,
announcements, etc.) to you. Weekly summaries of the material covered in
class will be posted there. Solutions to homeworks, solutions to the problems
worked in conference sessions, solutions to the hourly exams, and old exams
will be posted here. The homework solutions will generally be available the
Monday following the relevant conference session.
