General information about the Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy....


 

At 238,000 square feet, on 7 levels, the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy is currently the largest building on Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus.


 

Status of rooms often change from year to year, but here is a current general picture....

 
  • More than 200 various offices for Students, Post Docs, Research Staff, Administrative Staff and Faculty.
  • 21 full-size working research labs.
  • 9 full-size labs currently used as office space.
  • Teaching labs including General Physics at over 8,000 square feet pictures and Advanced Physics at more than 4,500 square feet pictures.
  • 9 classrooms, plus a 2,800 square feet, 324-seat auditorium.
  • 7 conference rooms (plus a few research groups have their own small conference areas).
  • A complete machine shop, a student machine shop, and a wood shop totaling 4,500 square feet.
  • A 1,600 square foot  library [pictures] (plus a couple of smaller group library / reading rooms).
  • Various rooms throughout the building containing terminals, workstations, servers, etc.
  • 1,800 square feet of shipping and receiving space with a loading dock.
  • A 2,500 square foot "high bay" with an overhead crane.
  • A "clean room suite" totaling 1,000 square feet.
  • An observatory dome on the roof.

  • 7 inside stairwells
  • 7 lobbies and lounges of various shapes and sizes totaling over 13,000 square feet
  • 2 passenger elevators and a 6-ton freight elevator
  • More than 31,000 square feet of corridor space
  • Last but not least, 25 restrooms
