Departmental email services

The department provides email accounts with essentially unlimited storage quotas. With an account on mail.pha.jhu.edu, you can access your email:

using any IMAP (or POP) capable software (e.g. pine, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Outlook). See our client setup instructions.
using the webmail interface at https://mail.pha.jhu.edu.
by SSHing into mail.pha.jhu.edu and running your favorite unixey mail software (e.g. pine, elm, mutt, Mail)

Departmental email is filtered at the edge of campus by the University email managers for spam and viruses.

University email and file sharing services

The university is experimenting with a MicroSoft SharePoint server so people (with JHED accounts) can share documents and discuss projects: Described at http://www.it.johnshopkins.edu/services/collaboration_tools/sharepoint/, one enters the site at https://collaborate.johnshopkins.edu

(Tip: You should know that to share a folder or file with people who don't have JHED logins, you need to set permissions on the folder and then create a ticket. The ticket generates a URL that outsiders can use to get past the login required for everyone else who doesn't use such a URL.)

The campus IT folks operate a couple of nice email systems:

JHEM (overview) (specific configuration info) is free to any JHU affiliate, and provides both email and calendaring support. Default quotas are relatively meager (1GB for faculty, 250 MB for others). You will need to migrate mail off of JHEM for long-term storage (use an IMAP mail client so you can drag and drop the JHEM folders to your personal computer). Some folks may want to use the JHEM calendar even if they use mail.pha for email.
