    Samba Printing Instructions

Samba provides a reliable and hassle-free way for PC users to print to our departmental printers. Here are some basic instructions for connecting to the Computer Center's public printers from a PC running Windows 9x, NT, ME, 2000. The steps may vary slightly depending upon the operating system version, but the basic procedure is the same.

    Windows XP

You should be able to simply open up a Windows Explorer window and, in the Address field, enter \\ccprint.pha.jhu.edu\printer-name where printer-name should be replaced by your favorite printer's name. Hit the Return key and your computer will attempt to connect to the Samba printer server.

If successful, you'll see the printer listed in the Printers and Faxes section (under the Start menu). Then you can right-click on each printer and define your preferred settings or select your default printer. (Please enable duplex printing to save paper as it is not enabled by default!!!!!!)

    Older Windows Versions

    1. Double-click on the Add Printer icon in the Printers list (Start Menu -> Settings -> Printers) and click the Next-> button to go to the next page of the printer-wizard.
    2. Select Network Printer and click Next->.
    3. Under network path or queue name, type in \\ccprint.pha.jhu.edu\printer-name. For example,
      1. \\ccprint.pha.jhu.edu\firstlp

For a list of printers available via Samba, see our departmental printers page.

      Click Next->.

    4. If your computer doesn't already have a printer driver installed for the printer to which you're connecting, you may need to install the driver. This software defines the capabilities of the printer, both common features and unusual ones. If you do not use the most appropriate driver, printing may not work correctly. For example, you may not be able to specify that a job should be printed in simplex mode, or select the right paper tray.

Note that on Windows NT, 2000 and XP machines you'll need Administrative privileges to install a printer driver.

Windows XP machines ship with drivers for most of our printers, and your machine will automatically install these drivers the first time you connect to the printer. In some cases, the driver will be found on your hard disk in a pool of available-but-not-yet-installed drivers for various kinds of devices. In other cases, you will be prompted to insert the Windows installation media.

Some older versions of Windows do not make available drivers for all of our printers (we have a mix of HP LaserJet 5M, HP LaserJet 4000 TN, Xerox N2125, Xerox 8200 and Xerox 8400), so we have made copies available to you over the network. When you connect to one of these printers from a Windows machine, you'll be given a list of manufacturers and printer models:

      1. Click the Have Disk button.
      2. In the Copy manufacturer's files from field, type in \\ccprint.pha.jhu.edu\print-drivers\directory where directory is either hplj4000, hplj5m, or xeroxn2125. (try \\ccprint.pha.jhu.edu\print-drivers\directory or \\128.220.143.20\print-drivers\directory if that doesn't work). Click OK.
      3. Select the appropriate driver. Depending on the printer model, the driver name should be Xerox DocuPrint N2125 PS, HP LaserJet 4000 Series PS, or HP LaserJet 5/5M PostScript. Click Next->.
      4. If this driver is already installed on your machine (Win95 isn't smart enough to check whether the driver is already installed), you'll be asked whether to keep existing driver or replace existing driver. Select replace existing driver (just for good measure) and click Next->.
    5. Name the printer whatever you want. Click Next->.
    6. Optionally, print a test page to make sure everything is working.

Once you've connected to printers offered by ccprint, you can print to them just as you would print to any other printer. If you open the printer's icon, your jobs (and any other PC users' jobs) will show up under the name smbguest.
