Good morning and welcome to Physics for Biological Science Majors. We are here to learn how to use physics to understand nature in general and biological systems in particular. I have taught this course twice before and I have noticed that here is a large spread in how much physics you know before you come here. Could I get a show of hands how many have studied physics at least one year in high school. How many of you have learned how to use Newtons laws. How many of of you know what kinetic energy is? How many of you know what angular momentum is? Thank you. So as expected we are a large class with varied backgrounds. Thats what I was counting on and I can assure you that even if you have never done physics before you can do well in this course. We basically start from scratch. On the other hand for you pro's who know something already I'm sure you will learn from this presentation perhaps in particular something about the application of physics in Biology. Now even though it is a big class I am hoping that you have or if not will make friends with others in your class and section. You can learn so much from each other by discussing physics and by learning alternative ways of understanding the material.
