Finally we get around to considering friction. Friction certainly confused physicists in early attempts to understand mechanics. However, with Newton's laws we now have the frame-work necessary for understanding the important effects of friction and drag-forces. It should be noted that in discussing the nature of friction we move into an area that we can only treat phenomenologically in this course. Most of the equations we derive are only approximate and are only valid in a limited set of circumstances.
