In addition to the increased pressure for resources, there were internal conflicts developing in the tribe. The members of the tribe gradually began to polarize into two opposing philosophical groups. One group, known as the Astron, looked for enlightenment from the sky. The other group, the Phys, sought wisdom by studying the minerals and rocks found throughout the island.
The tribal schism was a gradual event, so it is difficult to pinpoint its exact time. Most researchers agree that the split was complete by the time of Fast-e, a noted Astron shaman who spent his life studying the lines formed by the stars.
Although the two groups remained on friendly terms, they began
to compete for scarce resources, especially for the limited supply
of grads produced by the island. This resource competition, along
with increased population, lead to the need for increased living
space.
