are: the metallic elements lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and francium.   [P8.4]

are so named: because the metals dissolve in water to give solutions that contain significant concentrations of aqueous hydroxide ions. Materials generating such solutions are said to be alkalis (essentially the opposite of acids).   [P8.4]

occur: in Group I of the periodic table.   [P8.4]
