permittivity

of: a material medium

is: a property of the material that determines the magnitude of the electric field within the material produced by a given charge.   [P3.3, P4.5]

appears, for example: in the equation for the magnitude of the electric field at a distance from a point charge    [P4.5]

also appears, for example: in the equation for the capacitance of parallel plates of area separated by a distance and filled with the material:    [P4.5]

is equal: if the material is a dielectric, to the permittivity of free space times the relative permittivity of the material.   [P3.3, P4.5]

is equal: in a vacuum, to the permittivity of free space,    [P4.5]
