As is unfortunately the case, there are limits of how successful a simple model can be, and eventually both the Drude and Sommerfeld models ran out of steam.

Not only was quantum-mechanics not adquately considered, but the effects of the structure of the material need to be adequately taken into account as well. The advent of another approach to solid-state physics was impending.
