Here's a shot somewhere in the Great Plains, which I thought would be
cool at the time. Endless fields of grain. And oh, look at those
spacious skies... What can barely be made out
towards the horizon are power lines, in a sort of surreal kind of way.
Got lost somewhere around Clarinda, but navigating was really easy. The roads here go perfectly East/West and North/South. Nothing in the way they have to veer around. Look on the maps, it's kind of weird. So I jumbled around a bit on these small orthogonal numbered roads, then wound up on Rt. 34 West, in a small area of civilization. I hit the local HyVee and got some fruit and cans of chili, cheese, and tortillas. I noticed the sky was pretty dark behind me, as if storms were chasing me out of the state. So I fled them, to the haven of Nebraska.
Got onto 6W, and hit the Blue River State Park, where I was thinking of setting up camp. But it was more of a Recreation Area, just an overgrown grassy field with some benches. Signs said something about needing permits to park there. So I just made dinner and then left.
Somewhere around sunset I got this cool shot of the rays of sunlight
piercing the clouds.
Didn't see any other state parks, so I headed south on Rt. 81, into Kansas. The whole way down, storms were brewing to the East. I pondered how pretty Oz would be this time of year, as I listened to some tornado warnings on the radio. I finally got to Ottowa St. Fishing Lake, where I drove awhile on a gravel road to get to. Set up camp there, next to the lake. Thunder and lightening made the night kind of freaky. The sight of other RV's around was ironically comforting.
