Then I wanted to see Boot Hill cemetary, but it was inside the ripoff Dodge City museum. History note - Dodge city Front Street was in it's prime in the 1890's, but the buildings were knocked down for some stupid reason in the 1970's. So this museum rebuilt a mock Front St. Here it is.
They also demonstrate what happens when you tell someone his mustard's
yellar. (this is suposed to be a gunfight between some outlaws hiding
behind the wagon, and the sherrif, cutoff at the very left of the picture)
Boot Hill itself was a small patch of grass where they buried folks still wearing their boots. At some point the bodies were moved out, so the little cheesy tombstones are totally fake. I held the camera up high and jumped to get this shot over the tall fence.
Hit the road again, took Rt. 50 past many farms and flatlands to the Colorado border. Ominous thunderstorms were ahead, with lightning. It felt strange as most cars were heading out of the storm, and I was heading toward it.
I made it to I-25 North, and decided to camp somewhere near Pike's Peak. Ate dinner around 9 in a cute little mountain town Manitou Springs, nestled amidst the mountains. Wandered to a nearby bar to see Johnny and the Jukes play. They were a blues band, I paid $1 cover to get in. They weren't too bad for a bunch of Colorado Mountain boys. Spoke with the bassist for a bit, he wanted to give me one of their only 3 CD's left, but I confessed that I didn't have a CD player in my car.
Trief to find a camp after that. Went up Rt. 24, then to 67S, and hit a start park which was full. Went down the road abit, and saw a sign for a public campsite. Drove about 3 miles up a dirt road littered with rocks, and set up my tent on a grassy patch near some otehr cars. It was chilly, which felt great after the last few weeks of sweat-drenched heatwaves. The stars were out and shining amazingly without being drowned out in light pollution.
