Drove past some beautiful canyons to Los Alamos. Ate breakfast in a small burrito place, and once again, vented anger at those places that cook all their meals to order, yet stop serving breakfast foods before an arbitrary time. WHY?
Went to the free Bradbury Science Museum, not named after Ray but one of
the Manhattan Project engineers. Saw alot of history of the bomb. Here
are fully-sized mockups of Fatman/Littleboy that were built so the bomb-guys
could practice handling them.
Drove to downtown Santa Fe, tried to find a place to change the CV boots. Found a Goodyear on Cerrilos St., and they wanted $75 per boot. Amazingly, in the process of finding this garage, I drove past a youth hostel, where I could stay for $12 per night. I figured this would be easy, hopefully fun, so I dropped my car at the Goodyear.
The Hostel was great, it had amazing murals around the outside, and it was built in Southwest adobe style. (I later found out from people around the world, and I agree, that this is one of the best hostels in the USA)
I went to a supermarket to get some stuff to cook. wound up making some kind of casserole, what MIT Lincoln Labs would call American Chop Suey.
At the hostel I met all kinds of people. Sonya, who'd begin college at U. Michegan in the fall, was taking flamenco dance lessons. I met Yoichi from Japan, Jay from Poland, Mike from Portland, Oregon, and Kevin, from Taiwan.
They also had a computer there, so I was able to check email, as well as show my newfound page to some other travellers. At night, Jay, Yoichi, and I bought some wine at the local pharmacy and drank it back at the hostel.
