Joining the Maryland Orchid Society

If you are interested in orchid culture and would like to meet others with similar interests, we cordially invite you to join the ranks of Marylanders already enjoying the benefits of membership in the Maryland Orchid Society.

The MOS brings together people interested in orchids to promote and encourage orchid culture, preservation, education propagation, hybridization, and all other orchid-related activities of interest to its members. Benefits of membership include a mailed subscription to the Newsletter, voting rights, borrowing privileges from the MOS Library, monthly guest speakers, local judging, valuable door prizes, and much, much, more!

To join, mail an application form to the Membership Chairman or come to a monthly meeting.

Monthly Meeting Information

Meetings are held at: First Christian Church Hall, 5802 Roland Avenue, Baltimore, MD. This is just three blocks north of Northern Parkway on the west side of Roland Ave. For directions click here.

Except in special circumstances, they are held on the third Thursday of every month from September through June. No meeting is held during July and August because of heat and vacations.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY. If the snow emergency plan is in effect in Baltimore City or County as of noon on the day of our meeting, the scheduled meeting will be cancelled. (Call your radio station or state police to determine this.) Information will hopefully be placed on this web site after noon.

Annual Spring Show:

Once again the Spring Show will be held in the Horticultural Hall at the Timonium Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Home and Flower Show (formally Home & Garden Show).  The show will take place on the second weekend of the Home and Flower Show from Friday March 12th to Sunday March 14th.  Sales and displays will be open to the public from 10AM to 9PM on Friday and Saturday and 10AM to 6PM on Sunday.

The show will include many sizes and types of exhibit, such as individual plants, artistic arrangements of plants, photographs, and other artwork with orchid themes.  Setup of most displays will take place on Wednesday March 10th from 10AM to 8PM.  AOS judging of individual plants will begin at 9AM on Thursday March 11th.

A Mid-Atlantic regional meeting of the International Phalaenopsis Alliance is planned for Saturday from 12 to 5PM.

There will be an extensive sales area featuring the finest seedlings and flowering plants from hardy terrestrial orchids, to rare species, to the latest hybrids.  Our current list of plant vendors includes Arbec Orchids, Asiatica Nursery, Brennan’s Orchids, Celebrate Orchids, Fishing Creek Orchids, Main Street Orchids, Marriott Orchids, Nguyen Orchids, Orchids For You, Orchid Station, RKS Orchids, Seagrove Orchids, Stony Brook Orchids, The Little Greenhouse and Woodstream Orchids.  You’ll also find RSIS Orchid Jewelry, lighting equipment from Hydrofarm East and supplies from American Plant Food Co..

A new event will take place during the first weekend of the Home and Flower Show, March 5th to 7th.  Come and see an exhibit of Exotic Foliage Plants.  You may even want to use some in your orchid display the next weekend.

The Timonium fairgrounds are on York Road in Timonium (Take Rte 695 to Rte 83 North.  You can exit at the Timonium East exit, turn left at York Rd (second light) and look for the fairgrounds on your left.  You can also take the next exit and turn right on York Rd.  The Horticultural Hall is the first building on the right, which is also known as the 4H building.

Annual Fall Auction:

The Maryland Orchid Society holds an auction each year on the weekend after Thanksgiving. This year the auction was on Saturday  November 29, 2003 and next year’s date will probably also be the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  The location is the Ellicott City Armory and the auction will run from 12 to 5 PM. Come and bid on all types of plants, including the finest divisions from our members' collections and plants from vendors such as Arbec Orchids, Andy's Orchids, Carmela Orchids, and Little Greenhouse.

The Armory is on Rte. 103. Take Rte. 29 to Rte. 100 East. Take the first exit (1A) on to Long Gate Parkway. The parkway deadends after 2 lights at Rte. 103. Go left on 103 about 0.2 miles and the Armory will be on your left. For more information contact Cyrus Swett at (410)-750-8821.
