The Timepass Quiz Vol. 4
The topic for this week: Guess the
Bollywood song
Abey O Gabbar! Agar apni maa ka
doodh piya hai to try and guess the Hindi film song being
referred to in each clue! No peeking at the
answers until you have a guess!
In 1998, I read Upamanyu Chatterjee's English, August.
Intellectual Bong that he is, UC tries real hard to impress upon to his
English-speaking pot-smoking Marx-loving Floyd-felching
Bollywood-ignorant readers (i.e. other Bongs) his hatred of Bollywood
movie songs, and the only way he can do it is by translating the lines
into English. It was actually fun guessing what Hindi song he was
talking about. For example, here's one: "Spring has awoken from its
slumber, I have seen this weather for the first time". If you fancy
yourself to be (like me) a Bollywood expert on 80s movies, it would
have taken you less than a minute to guess that he was referring to the
Hero song picturized on the cute Meenakshi Seshadri that
goes "Nindiya se jaagi bahaar/ Aisa mausam dekha pehli baar"
This inspired Subroto and I to come up with our own clues for Hindi
songs. Here are some of the original ones we came up with, or maybe
inspired by those:
1) Hinglish rapper in courtyard, mother at door, suggest, O white girl,
a means of entry into your house.
2) Five thousand kilograms, Tamilian asking, "Is this the coal
derivative they use to make roads?"
3) A crocodile is no force on a tea-hut
4) I, Kaalia The Crow's reptilian nemesis, go in the lakelike depth of
your Persian sweet fruit drink-like eyes
5) Greetings, Peter Pan's Gult nemesis, greetings, Peter Pan's Gult
nemesis, greetings, greetings.
6) Slide cot, looks like Will Smith's wife.
7) My Kiran Kumar's dad's partner, carry on loving. Youth is mad,
beautiful, stubborn neighbour, internet service provider, God,
beautiful.
8) Fishy airport, Shivraj Kumar, Upendra, Chinese leader result of
addition, two thirds of band that covered Troggs song in 1994.
9) Salutation, male teacher on kind of linux in hand, silk, Jungle Book
python, room, consignment, oh thirteen what say!
10) Here there Do Re world in your Smita Patil husband is.
