IMPORTANT WARNING: The latest 2010 NRC rankings are massively compromised,
something that was obvious to anyone with any experience in quantitative
rankings. On April 21, 2011, NRC acknowledged dramatic mistakes in processing of
their rankings data and has issued gigantic
changes
.

For the sake of objective reality
the reader should correct for a grotesque
bias
in favor of the UK and British Commonwealth institutions (for example,
Imperial College London, McGill (CAN)
and Australian National University are
ranked above Stanford, Cornell and Berkeley, University of Edinburgh above ETH and
University of Tokyo, etc.). Be warned, this is not easy: THES should have
simply placed their favorite Oxbridge-imitation institutions to their
imaginary high positions BY HAND, rather than tilting the whole
rankings in this ridiculous fashion (for example,
College of William and Mary beats Ohio State in Physical Sciences).
Even their suppossedly purely quantitative
criteria are spiked.
This bias has made THES the undisputed
champion of comical levity in the rankings world, and
has led to the recent split between The Times
and QS, as they are gradually backpedalling from their embarassing
earlier algorithms (a good way to monitor this backpedalling is to consider
a steady decline over the years
of the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University
in the THES/THE/QS rankings, as the two institutions journey from the very top
in the early years toward the basement, where they belong. It is therefore only
fair to admit that, while the early THES/THE/QS rankings were truly
ridiculous, the current ones are merely comical.).
Above I list only The Times' 2010 and 2011 rankings, the more serious (barely!)
of the two.
